Al-Jaafari: Syria is testing the credibility of those who announced support to Annan’s plan

NEW YORK_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari stressed Syria’s commitment to making the mission of the UN Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, a success, adding ”We have a great commitment to cooperation with Annan, and we expect the other sides to stick to their obligations according to Annan’s plan.”

He said that some policies in the region are disappointing because the plan of the UN Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, and ending violence have succeeded, adding that instigative propaganda won’t be useful.

In a press conference on Thursday following a closed UN Security Council session, al-Jaafari said that Syria is testing the credibility of those who announced support to Annan’s plan.

”Because they are disappointed, they are still betting on every possibility to sabotage the plan,” he added.

”I would like to refer to some Arab and regional countries and some international powers, because the Syrian crisis has local, Arab and regional dimensions, and an international one…Consequently, it is not enough that the Syrian government shows full commitment to Annan’s plan, but all sides have to stand by us clearly and unequivocally,” al-Jaafari said.

Syria’s permanent representative to the UN stressed that eight violations took place this morning by armed terrorist groups in Syria.

He said that Annan was right when he called on countries which have influence on the armed terrorist groups to stop their instigating campaigns.

The Syrian Government is maintaining the highest degrees of self-control and it is committed to what has been agreed upon, al-Jaafari added.

Al-Jaafari stressed that the Syrian Government is maintaing the highest degrees of self-control, saying “Today, we are verifying the reactions and the credibility of all those who were claiming that they support any peace plan and that the moment of truth has come; we challenge those who were wagering on the failure of Annan’s plan.”

Al-Jaafari added that the Syrian Government insisted that spreading observers should take place once the violence ends.

Al-Jaafari said, “Spreading observers is an issue agreed on by the Syrian Government and the UN, and we are considering the final points in some technical sides concerning the spreading of those forces.”

He pointed out that Annan’s six-point plan is an integrated package that should be respected by all sides, including the armed groups and the states which have influence over them, asserting that the forces withdrew from the cities.

On the current Turkish stances on Syria, al-Jaafari said that the Turkish Government’s policies have become a part of the problem as it is facilitating the infiltration of gunmen through the borders to Syria and hosts armed groups on its ground.

He noted that the Turkish policies are considered a violation of  Annan’s plan, adding that Turkey has to reconsider its stances before asking the NATO to interfere because the regions needs stability and good neighborhood relations.

Al-Jaafari said that those who doubt the intentions of the Syrian Government basically did not wish peaceful efforts and they were wagering on the possibility of thwarting Annan’s mission.

Al-Jaafari wondered why some sides push a big number of Syrian civilians to flee their villages as refugees in order to justify the human intervention and hold humanitarian passages, saying “this is part of agendas.”

He pointed out to the Syrian government’s official call on all Syrians who left the country to return to their villages and cities as soon as possible, saying “there are guarantees by the government in this regard.. it now reconstructs what has been ruined by the armed terrorist groups.”

On Annan’s visit to Teheran, al-Jaafar said that Iran supported his plan and this is a positive indication.

As for the incident that took place near the Turkish-Syrian borders, al-Jaafar clarified that an armed group entered Syria from Turkey and opened fire at a police center in the Syrian lands.. the Syrian police has responded to the fire.. the attackers withdrew, but they reopened the fire at the Police center which also responded to the fire and this led to the causalities.

“The countries which have met in Istanbul were not committed to avoiding the Syrian people’s bloodshed, but on the contrary, they were seeking to overthrow the Syrian state,” the Syrian Ambassador said.

He added that the Syrian government sent an official letter to Annan informing him of its commitment to his plan on March 27th, but on April 1st, 71 countries met in Istanbul and instead of supporting Anna’s plan, they agreed to fund the Turkey-based military opposition with $ 100 million, and this was a provocative act.

“The $ 100 million was paid as wages for the armed groups and mercenaries  under the title of monthly salaries, setting up safe places as a pretext to establish the so-called human passages,” al-Jaafari said.

He added that what is taking place in the region is a change in the political geography , it has no relation to several thousands of Syrian refugees in Turkey, nor it is related to the victims who fell during the crisis, but the matter is relating to changing the Syrian government’s policy, its independent  decision and changing the political geography.

Regarding  the sides who are desperate from Syria commitment in Annan’s plan, al-Jaafari said that they are “the friends of Syria who have met in Istanbul, called for arming the opposition, and supplying them with weapons and sheltering them.. they think that terrorism is only acts of crimes and killing, but there are other forms of terrorism; Syria is a victim of diplomatic, political and media terrorism.”

As for the infiltration of terrorists from Saudi Arabia into Syria, al-Jaafari added “we have a lot of evidence and proofs that will embarrass the countries which sponsored terror in Syria, but we will uncover this at a suitable time.”
