DAMASCUS – 27/03/2013 – President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday called upon the leaders of the BRIC S countries to join efforts to reach an immediate halt to violence in Syria so as to guarantee the success of the political solution, “which requires a clear international will to drain the sources of terrorism and stop its arming and funding.”

In a message to the BRIC S summit held in South Africa, which is addressed to President of the Summit Jacob Zuma, President al-Assad called upon the leaders of the BRIC S to contribute to stabilizing the world, stressing that “the BRIC S group has become a hope for our oppressed peoples that suffer from blatant foreign interference in their affairs against their interests.”

President al-Assad said that Syria has been suffering, for two years, from terrorism supported by Arab, regional and western countries that are involved in killing civilians and destroying the infrastructure and the cultural heritage of the country as well as its identity characterized by co-existence and equality among all components of its people.

“You, with all the huge political, economic and cultural weight you represent that seeks to consolidate peace, security and justice in the troubled world of today, are called upon to exert all possible efforts to end the suffering of the Syrian people resulted from the unjust economic sanctions in violation of the international law which directly affect the livelihood of our citizens and their daily needs,” the President’s message said.

President al-Assad voiced the Syrians’ aspiration to work with the BRIC S countries “being a just force that seeks to spread peace, security and cooperation among countries away from hegemony, its dictates and oppression which have lasted for decades upon our peoples and nation.”

The President expressed hope that the BRIC S countries “play effective role to restrain the excessiveness of countries known for contradicting the UN Charter by meddling in other counties’ internal affairs and to work for achieving democracy in international relations”.
