Syria’s UNESCO Delegation:Turkey Involved in Illicit Trafficking in Syria’s Antiquities

Apr 27, 2013 – SANA – The Syrian delegation to the 191st session of the Executive Board of UNESCO which concluded activities in Paris on Friday stressed that the Turkish government of Justice and Development Party is involved in illicit trafficking in Syria’s antiquities.

In a memorandum presented to the Board, the delegation stressed Syria’s steadfastness and confrontation against terrorism and the obscurantist Salafi thought which are destroying the heritage and antiquities of Syria.

The delegation added that “Jabhat al-Nusra” terrorists, backed politically and militarily by the Turkish government, detonated few days ago the southern gate and one of the minarets of the Great Umayyad Mosque in Aleppo.

UNESCO Director-General, Irna Bokova, called on UNESCO members to support efforts to protect the heritage of Syria, stressing that protecting Syria’s heritage is every member state’s responsibility.

Bokova pointed out to the efforts exerted by the UNESCO since the beginning of the crisis in Syria to condemn “the systematic attacks against the Syrian antiquities.”
