DAMASCUS, (SANA) – The People’s Assembly on Thursday held a session headed by Deputy Speaker, Fihmi Hassan, and listened to the answers of Deputy Prime Minister for Services Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and ministers of irrigation, interior and higher education on a number of major issues related to services and procedures made by the government to alleviate the effects of the crisis on the citizens.

MP Hammad al-Soud hailed the decision of the government on raising the price of wheat taking into consideration the cost of fuel and production requirements.

MP Suhil Khuder pointed out to the efforts exerted by the government in following up the consultative meetings in implementation of the political program to resolve the crisis, highlighting the importance of combating corruption.

Another member of the People’s Assembly called on the international organizations to play an active role in freeing Bishops Yazigi and Ibrahim, considering the heinous Zionist aggression on sites in Damascus as “reflecting the defeat of the U.S.-Zionist project in face of the sweeping victories of the Syrian Army.”

MP Ali al-Sattouf pointed out that the international activism witnessed currently came as a result of the steadfastness of the Syrian people and the sacrifices of the Syrian Army, noting the importance of dealing with the issues of the nabbed people.

Other MPs highlighted the necessity of cooperation between the People’s Assembly and the ministers to confront the social and economic repercussions of the crisis and combating corruption, in addition to raising social awareness about the losses of the government because of corruption.

 They called for setting mechanisms for initiating the national dialogue and specifying the personalities which will participate in dialogue, as well as issuing a statement on the vision of the government towards the participation in Geneva Conference.

Deputy Prime Minister for Services Affairs, Minister of Local Administration, Omar Ghallawanji, pointed out that the services sector has been the target of the armed terrorist groups since the beginning of the crisis, adding that the services sector has lost some 5000 institutions with direct material damage estimated at SYP 155 billion so far, in addition to indirect material damage of SYP 1.2 trillion.

Ghallawanji said that the sabotage acts and the targeting of employees did not weaken the efforts of the government and employees to continue offering best services, pointing out that cost of repairing hundreds of services centers and buildings has reached SYP 7 billion so far.

He added that the services sector has lost over 3500 martyrs, more than 8000 injured and some 2500 kidnapped and lost workers so far.

Concerning the damage caused to the properties of the citizens as a result of the armed terrorist groups’ acts, Ghallawanji stated that the cost of damage until Dec 31st, 2012 is about SYP 40 billion.

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Qadri Jamil, said that the work of the ministerial committee tasked with implementing the political program to resolve the crisis in Syria has been very important.

He noted the considerable progress made by the government in implementing this program and the positive attitude it adopted towards the Russian-U.S. rapprochement, in addition to the support of the internal national opposition to the program.

He added that the higher principles represented in discarding violence and rejecting all forms of foreign interference and other issues which harm the Syrian sovereignty and independence are issues that cannot be negotiated.

For his part, Minister of Interior , Major General Mohammad al-Shaar, stressed that the Ministry is working in more than one direction –including the military side along with the army and the security side- to combat all forms of crime, in addition to the work of the ministry in the services and social sides.

He hailed the sacrifices of the security forces personnel as the number of martyrs has reached 2000 and about 7000 injured members.
