‘Women against Hatred and Terrorism’ Campaign…Tunisian Women Apologize to Syrian Mothers
”Ten gunmen who called themselves Jihadists barged into my house after midnight and killed my two sons, ” says Joumana with tears tricking down her cheeks.
”We have been living together in peace in Syria…Those who want Jihad have to go to Palestine,” she says.
Apologetic, the Tunisian mother says ”I apologize to the Syrian mothers…my son left home a year and three months ago…He was misguided. If I knew where he was heading, I would’ve prevented him by force…We are sorry.”
The meeting comes as part of a campaign called ”Women against Hatred and Terrorism” launched Tuesday from the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus by Syrian and Tunisian women, among them Joumana and Latifa.
The campaign sounds the alarm bell on the violence against women, especially the Syrian women who were forced to leave their homes to refugee camps in neighboring countries due to the armed terrorist attacks for shelter and protection, but for many women, the camps have offered them anything but.
Maasoud al-Ramadani, member of a civil society committee in Tunisia who accompanies the Tunisian women delegation to Syria said that ”We, as a civil society, have had a revolution to attain our freedoms…to live the Islam that rejects violence.”
Sheikh Abdul-Majid al-Barari who taught Arabic at al-Zaitounah University in Tunis said ”it was unthinkable that there might be Tunisians who would come to Syria to stir up hostilities…Syrian-Tunisian ties have always been unbreakable since the dawn of history.”
Ikbal, who led a worldwide campaign to recover the Tunisian youths who were misled into joining ‘Jihad’ in Syria, said ”My handicapped brother was misled into going to Syria for jihad…When he arrived there, they rigged his wheelchair with explosives.”
”It was Jabhat al-Nusra that recruited him, but before they blew him up, they had to return him to Tunisia thanks to the media campaign I led.”
