US Deputy Secretary of State holds talks with Egyptian authorities: Suez, Israel, Weapons and Money are the US-Egypt main topics, because of the long economic & military cooperation between the two countries
William Burns, US Deputy Secretary of State, is to hold talks with Egyptian government representatives in Cairo to suggest a political transition plan.
It is the first visit by a senior US official since the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi on 4 July.
Mr Burns met administration officials as well as military leaders and business figures during his visit.
US says Mr Burns will urge “an end to all violence and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government”.
These words sound like a “democratic” American indication to admit the “Muslim Brotherhood“ as a legitimate political presence.
The fact that the meetings are attended not only by politics and the military, but also men from the Egyptian finance world, clearly indicates what is the language spoken during the meeting.
Egypt is very important to the United States because the peace treaty with Israel and the control of the Suez Canal, a vital waterway for the U.S. military force in the Middle East.
And Burns is a top diplomat who speaks Arabic, has written books on economic aid and U.S. policy toward Egypt and has huge experience in the Arab world, also as U.S. ambassador to the Jordan colony.
As part of a two-day visit, Burns met the military-backed administration led by interim President Adly Mansour and Prime Minister-designate Hazem el-Beblawi, as well as army chief and Defense Minister General Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.
There are no immediate word on the discussions with the interim civilian leaders.
But the military said in a statement by the army spokesman that Burns and Sisi discussed the recent political developments in Egypt and ways to reinforce cooperation between the two countries.
Burns is the American diplomat n.2 and is also expected to meet with civil society groups and business leaders during his trip.
