Iran’s FM: “If chemical weapons were used in Syria, terrorist groups are to blame”
August 22, 2013 – Tehran – Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said that the Syrian Government cannot be responsible for a possible chemical attack on Damascus Countryside.
“If the use of the chemical weapons is true, surely the armed terrorist groups are the one which used them as it was proved that they do not hesitate to commit any crime,” Zarif said in a phone call with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday.
Zarif wondered about how the Syrian Government can resort to such an act when the UN investigation mission exist in Damascus and the army is inflicting heavy losses upon the terrorists.
“This criminal act has been committed by the terrorist groups because escalating and internationalizing the crisis in Syria serve their interests,” he said.
“If the use of chemical weapons in Syria is true, it is definitely used by the terrorist takfiri groups as they have practically proved that they would commit any crime,” the Iranian official said.
He reiterated Iran’s firm stances on rejecting the use of the weapons of mass destruction and that Iran strongly condemns the use of any kind of chemical weapons.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, Hussein Amir Abdullahian expressed astonishment over the talk about the Syrian army’s use of chemical weapons in Damascus Countryside as it coincides with the start of the work of the UN investigation mission on the use of the chemical weapons in Syria.
In a statement to al-Mayadeen TV Channel, Abdullahyan said that the international community should prevent the use of the chemical weapons by the terrorists against the Syrian people after they used them in Khan al-Assal near Aleppo.
Earlier, The General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said that biased channels of misdirection and bloodshed have, as they always do, made false allegations that the Syrian Army used chemical weapons in Damascus Countryside.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the General Command of the Army and Armed Forces affirmed that those allegations are completely baseless and untrue, and they are part of the dirty media warfare on Syria.
A media source dismissed as untrue the news broadcast by some media outlets that chemical weapons have been used in the Ghouta region in Damascus Countryside.
The source stressed that the reports circulated by the TV channels of al-Jazeera, al-Arabiya, Sky News and other channels which are involved in the shedding of Syrian blood and supporting terrorism, are completely baseless, and that the aim behind broadcasting such reports is to distract the UN chemical weapons investigation committee from its mission.
