Iran nuclear deal sealed, recognizing its right to uranium enrichment

Geneva – Iran and the P5+1 group countries announced reaching an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program that recognizes Iran’s right to enrich uranium and continue activities at its nuclear facilities.

“We reached an agreement,” the Iranian IRNA news agency quoted Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as saying on his Twitter page.

For her part, the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton confirmed that a deal was sealed with Iran on its nuclear program, which followed five days of hard negotiations in Geneva between Iran and the P5+1 group countries that include the US, France, Britain, Russia and China, in addition to Germany.

In addition to the recognition that Iran will have an enrichment program, the deal also recognizes progress with activities in its nuclear facilities of Arak, Fordo and Tanaz in their current state.

According to the four-page accord document, oil embargo on Iran will be suspended and siege will be fully lifted on petrochemical and auto industries. Sanctions on gold and other precious metals, transport, insurance and oil will also be suspended.

In return, Iran will have to take “trust-building measures” over the 6-months duration of the accord that would include not expanding its activities at the aforementioned three nuclear facilities, while it will continue enrichment under 5% level and production of enriched materials in Fordo and Tanaz, in addition to proceeding with search and development process in its nuclear program.

Uranium enrichment to 20 % level will be suspended during the coming 6 months and all amounts of enriched uranium will remain inside Iran.

Syria welcomes Geneva agreement between Iran and P5+1 countries

Damascus – An official source at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said that Syria welcomes the agreement which was struck in Geneva between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the P5+1 countries.

The source added that Syria considers the agreement as “historic” and it maintains the interests of the Iranian brotherly people, adding that the agreement recognizes the right of the Iranian people to use the nuclear power for peaceful purposes.

Syria believes that reaching such agreement is evidence that political solutions to the crises of the region are the best means to ensure the security and stability of the region far from foreign intervention and threats to use force, the source said.

In a statement to SANA, the source added that the agreement paves the way for international efforts to free the Middle East of all weapons of mass destruction, particularly after Syria’s accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and Israel remains the only obstacle preventing this objective from being achieved because it is the only side that possesses nuclear weapons and rejects to put its nuclear facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Syria congratulates the Iranian brotherly people and their wise leadership on this historic achievement which reiterates Iran’s role in the stability and security of the region,” the source concluded.

Syrian Information Minister: Agreement means victory of dialogue over threats

Meanwhile, Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group countries “is a victory for the logic of dialogue and political work over the logic of threats, ultimatums, challenges and wars”.

Speaking to the Syrian TV by phone, al-Zoubi said the agreement will yield fruits once it is signed and will reflect on each sincere international effort seeking stability and security in the region.

He referred to countries and entities which felt threatened and panicked by the agreement, citing Saudi Arabia and Israel, which proves these sides’ preference for the logic of force, threat and interference over the logic of dialogue that is evident in their coordination regarding the events in Syria.

Iran and the P5+1 group struck an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program that recognizes Iran’s right to enrich uranium and continue its activities in the Iranian nuclear facilities after long negotiations held in Geneva.

Putin: Iran nuclear deal would lead to untying one of most difficult knots in world politics

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Iran-P5+1 group deal has led to getting closer to “untying one of the most difficult knots in world politics”.

In a Kremlin statement, Putin added “a breakthrough step has been made, but only the first on a long and difficult path,” stressing that the agreement would positively affect the international situation particularly in the Middle East.

Lavrov: Iran nuclear deal can be useful for Geneva 2 preparations

Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov said the core of the Iran-P5+1 group accord was based on an idea proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Commenting on the deal reached last night, Lavrov stressed his confidence that Iran will honestly cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency, noting that the deal means agreement on the need to recognize Iran’s right to possess nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, including right to uranium enrichment.

“At the end of the day, this is a gain for all of us,” Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russia Today website, emphasizing that the deal has removed all risks and questions over the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction due to the Iranian nuclear program.

He considered that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program can be useful with regard to the preparations to hold the intended international conference on Syria, known as Geneva 2.

“In addition to the many advantages, I hope this agreement will yield benefits for the efforts seeking solving the Syrian problem, and that is through Iran joining us in the constructive work t hold Geneva 2,” said Lavrov.

In the same context, Russian Foreign Minister said the agreement will affect in a constructive way in the situation of the Middle East region and contribute to overcoming the tendency of solving crises and disputes in this region by means of force that has prevailed over the past years.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, for his part, expressed welcome of Iran nuclear deal, saying in a statement that the agreement will contribute to preserving peace and stability in the Middle East in terms of maintaining the international system of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The accord also received welcome by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany who considered it as an encouraging start to further build on this preliminary deal and very good for the whole world, including the Middle East.
