Syrian President Bashar Assad has praised Russia for restoring balance to international relations flowing long years of ‘hegemony’ by the United States.

“Russia has reestablished balance in international relations, after long years of hegemony” by the United States, SANA quoted Assad as saying as he received a Russian parliamentary delegation.

He described Moscow’s role as “essential and vital,” and expressed “the admiration of the Syrian people for Russia’s positions.”

Assad criticized the United States and its Western allies for “acting to destabilize countries whose policies do not coincide with their own.”

Russia has been a key player regarding the US-backed war which has torn Syria, helping the Syrian government and opposition find a political solution to the crisis.

Syria sank into war in March 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.
