Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu: “Strikes on Aleppo, for humanitarian reasons, have been temporarily stopped”
Moscow, SANA– Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian and Syrian air forces had stopped airstrikes on Aleppo from 10:00am local time (0700 GMT).
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in a televised meeting with military officials, said strikes had been halted from 10:00 on Tuesday.
On Monday, The Russian Defense Ministry announced a humanitarian pause in Aleppo starting from next Thursday at 08:00 am (05:00 GMT) till 04:00 pm to allow the passage of the civilians and the evacuation of the sick and the injured.
Shoigu called on the countries that have influence over armed groups in eastern Aleppo to convince their leaders to stop military action and abandon the city.
“Everyone really interested in the fastest possible stabilization of the situation in the city of Aleppo should take genuine political steps and not continue shuffling political papers.” Shoigu said.
“Military experts would meet in Geneva on Wednesday to start work on separating “terrorists” from Syria’s moderate opposition,” Shoigu said, adding that Russian specialists had already arrived there.
Lavrov stresses on separating al-Nusra from US-backed factions in conjunction with pause of air strikes in Aleppo
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted the necessity of working on separating Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization from the “armed factions” supported by the US and regional states in conjunction with the halting of Russian and Syrian airstrikes on Aleppo.
In a press statement with his Paraguayan counterpart in Moscow, Lavrov said the Syrian and Russian sorties in Aleppo stopped today as a gesture of goodwill, adding that this pause in bombing must be used by Russia’s partners to separate Jabhat al-Nusra and its affiliates from the factions that are funded, supported and armed by the United States and some European and regional countries.
He noted that this separation was promised since February 2016, but nothing has been done so far.
Lavrov pointed out that according to the outcomes of Lausanne meeting on Syria last Saturday, military experts would meet in Geneva on Wednesday to work on separating al-Nusra terrorist organization from the so-called “moderate opposition” in Aleppo.
Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin: “Permanent ceasefire in Aleppo is possible if Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists are taken out”
Moscow, SANA – Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said that permanent ceasefire in the city of Aleppo is possible if Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists are taken out from the eastern parts of the city.
The terrorists in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo make civilians as human shields and prevent them from getting out through safe corridors opened by the Syrian government, as they also hinder the access of the humanitarian aid to those in need for them.
RT Website quoted Churkin as saying in a press conference held in New York that Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists rejected a proposal presented by the UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura on giving those guarantees to get out from the eastern neighborhoods, adding that they rejected all proposals offered.
Churkin’s statements came in comment on the statement of US Secretary of State Spokesman Mark Toner, who said that an eight-hour pause of attacks in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo “would be a good thing,” but “it’s a bit too little, too late.”
Russian Defense Ministry announced that a humanitarian pause in Aleppo is scheduled from 08:00 a.m. (05:00 GMT)till 04:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The United Nations said it thinks a 48-hour pause is needed to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to numerous individuals in need in Aleppo.
Russian General Staff Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy: “Terrorists in Aleppo still receiving US-made TOW missiles”
Moscow, SANA– Chief of the Main Operations Department of the Russian General Staff Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy stressed that the terrorists in Aleppo are still receiving the US-made TOW antitank missile systems from their backers.
Rudskoy was quoted by TASS News Agency as saying “”According to information coming from several sources, gunmen continue receiving modern types of weapons, including US-made TOW guided antitank missiles”.
He indicated that terrorists are also not abandoning their attempts to restore the routes of supplying gangs with armaments and ammunition in eastern Aleppo. However, the Russian air task force “is constantly delivering strikes against arriving reserves and formations with armaments on the approaches to the city.”
In the current situation, a unilateral ceasefire is senseless and will allow Jabhat al-Nusra and terrorists aligning with it to restore their combat capability, the Russian general explained.
