Russian Airstrikes Kill 120 Daesh Terrorists
Fleeing From Raqqa
The Russian Aerospace Forces have destroyed some 120 Daesh (banned in Russia) militants trying to escape the violent group’s self-proclaimed capital city of Raqqa in Syria, a military source told Sputnik.
The radicals were eliminated by Russian airstrikes on May 25, while fleeing from Syria’s Raqqa for Palmyra, according to a source in the Russian Defense Ministry. The source revealed that the convoy of 39 pick-up trucks armed with large-caliber machine-guns was heading out of the city.
“As a result of these strikes, 32 pick-up trucks were destroyed and some 120 terrorists were killed,” the source said, explaining that the Russian military in Syria received several confirmed reports that Daesh terrorists made a deal the units of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) operating near Raqqa, allowing them to leave the embattled city without obstacles.
“Upon receiving this information, the command of the Russian contingent in Syria has taken measures to prevent the exodus of Daesh terrorists in the southern direction,” the source said.
The source went on by saying that Russian drones have been deployed around the clock to track the possible routes that the terrorists could use to escape the city and move toward Palmyra. Russian combat aircraft and special forces units were also engaged in the operation to prevent the militants from fleeing Raqqa.
“Any attempts by Daesh militants to move toward Palmyra and to build up their forces there will be squashed,” the source stressed.
The US-led coalition reported earlier on Friday it had conducted nine airstrikes on Daesh militants in Raqqa, destroying six fighting positions, three vehicles, a tactical vehicle, and a mortar system.
The alliance also said that airstrikes between April 27 and May 18 had eliminated three senior foreign Daesh leaders responsible for the terrorist group’s financing, training and drone operations.
The Syrian conflict has been raging since 2011 with its government troops fighting against numerous opposition and terrorist groups. The Kurdish-led SDF launched the Wrath of Euphrates operation in November 2016 aimed at the liberation of Raqqa city from terrorists.
Putin Awards Russian Spetsnaz Forces
Who Repelled Terrorists attack
Russian President Vladimir Putin has fulfilled his promise and personally awarded Russian Special Forces’ fighters who have been repelling an attack by terrorists in Syria for two days, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
May 10 saw four officers from the Russian Defense Ministry’s Special Operations Forces awarded medals for showing extraordinary courage combatting terrorists in Syria’s Aleppo, according to Russia’s Rossiya-24 television channel. The relevant decree was earlier issued by Putin.According to media reports, 16 Russian Spetsnaz officers entered the frontline in the province of Aleppo to transfer the coordinates of targets for airstikes. They were attacked by militants. Terrorists used Grad systems, artillery, mortars and a tank to attack the Russian military.
The Russian fighters decided to take the fight and for two days they had repelled 300 terrorists’ attacks. They managed to destroy the enemy tank, two infantry fighting vehicles and an explosive-packed car with a suicide bomber. The militants retreated, Russian military avoided losses.
“The head of the state personally awarded Russian Spetsnaz fighters who accomplied a feat in the Syrian province of Aleppo on Wednesday just as he had promised,” Peskov said.
The spokesman recalled that Russian Special Forces have been repelling attacks by numerous groups of terrorists for two days on the frontline.
He said that “the Syrian troops in this area retreated leaving our military on the frontline because of lack of coordination of actions.”
The commander of the group who was named a Hero of the Russian Federation said earlier that they were part of a 16-strong Russian military unit which managed to successfully repel attacks by 300 jihadists. He specified that the Russian Spetsnaz soldiers had been attacked by al-Nusra Front militants, adding that they possess enough military equipment and have some foreign-made medications.
“We avoided casualties due to good shelter and location. Besides, we had a good advantage in terms of armament and equipment, including thermal imaging sights. All this added to our success,” he said.
Russian One TV-channel broadcast the Defense Ministry’s report about awards for the Special Forces’ officers. When Putin learned about what they had done, he wrote on a document: “I agree, will award them personally.”
Earlier, Russian security expert Igor Nikolaychuk told Sputnik that the terrorists were defeated also thanks to tactics employed in the preparation and use of Russian Special Forces’ groups.
“First and foremost, I would single out the strategies which have been in place since the Afghan war, when the problem of anti-terrorist activity was being resolved with the help of small-size, mobile and well-trained groups,” Nikolaychuk said, referring to the legendary Alfa anti-terrorist group.
