On the night of 24 April 1915 the Turkish government arrested hundreds of Armenian community leaders, between the most prominent public figures of the Armenian community in Constantinople [today known as Istanbul]: they were transferred to Anatolia’s prisons, where most of them were executed.

In 1915, there were 2 million Armenians living in the declining Ottoman Empire. But under the cover of World War I, the Turkish government systematically destroyed 1.5 million people in attempts to unify all of the Turkish people by creating a new empire with one language and one religion.

This ethnic cleaning of Armenians, and other minorities, including Assyrians, Pontian and Anatolian Greeks, is today known as the Armenian Genocide.

Despite pressure from Armenians and activists worldwide, Turkey still refuses to acknowledge the genocide, claiming that there was no premeditation on the deaths of the Armenians. But the history and the evidence shows us otherwise…

To this very day the Armenian Genocide, which began within the borders of the Ottoman Empire in 1915, has been vehemently denied by the Republics of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Both Israel and the United States of America have likewise refused to acknowledge the historical reality of the Armenian Holocaust. Why should these nations adamantly persist in their denial of such a well documented crime against humanity?

Because 100 years later in 2015 there is now indisputable evidence that the very same countries are perpetrating a similar genocide against the people of Syria, especially against the Christian communities as occurred during the Armenian Genocide.

President Bashar al-Assad said the Syrian and Armenian people face the same challenges and dangers.

The President’s remarks came during a meeting on Thursday with the visiting delegation of the Armenian-Syrian Friendship Association at the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, headed by the Association’s President Tachat Vardapetyan.

Drawing parallels between the dangers facing the people of Syria and Armenia, the President said the Ottomans who committed massacres against the Armenian people a hundred years ago are today, represented by Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government, using the same tools, mainly terrorism, against the Syrian people.

Vardapetyan, for his part, stressed that the Armenian people stand by the side of the people of Syria in the face of the regionally-backed terrorist war waged on them, voicing confidence that Syria will get over this war and rout terrorism and its backers.

Syria expressed at a global forum its condemnation of the genocide which the Ottoman Turks committed against the Armenian people in 1915.

The Global Forum “Against the Crime of Genocide” was held in the Armenian capital Yerevan commemorating the Centennial of the well-known genocide, which is marked on April 24 every year.

“Any crime against humans must be condemned and rejected whoever the perpetrator, and how if that crime was a genocide in which more than a million and a half of the brotherly Armenian people were killed,” al-Laham told the forum.

“We in Syria have always felt the Armenians’ sense of belonging is as much to Syria as it is to Armenian and vice versa,” he said, affirming that the Armenians in Syria are an integral part of its people.
