[SouthFront] ~ On February 3, militants of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) shot down a Russian Su-25 attack aircraft with a MANPAD, over the village of Khan al-Sabil in the Syrian province of Idlib. The attack aircraft was on a combat patrol, carrying out airstrikes on facilities belonging to the terrorist group in the area of Saraqib.

The warplane’s pilot, Major Roman Filipov ejected before the plane crashed. Injured and surrounded, Filipov fought with the militants on the ground. During the fight, he fired at least 40 rounds from his Stechkin automatic pistol at the enemies. Then, Filipov allowed the militants to approach him, shouted “This is for our boys!” and blew himself up using a hand grenade. This explosion likely killed or injured a few militants.

Following the incident, the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a massive strike on the area where the militants downed the warplane and where they attempted to capture its pilot. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the strike killed at least 30 militants.

With help of Turkey, Filipov’s body was handed over to Russia and was brought to the country on February 6. Major Filipov was posthumously awarded the title of the Hero of Russia, the highest honorary title of the Russian Federation.

According to the local sources, Russia deployed additional units  of the Special Forces at frontlines in Syria following the shootdown of the Su-25. It appears that the incident triggered an increase of both ground and air aspects of the Russian military involvement in the Idlib operation. This may become a turning point in the standoff in this part of the country, similar  to the operations in Aleppo, Deir Ezzor and Palmyra, when Russia shifted its strategy from regular support ofthe Syrian Army to direct active actions. If this occurs, it would significantly influence the dynamic and the nature of the military operations in Idlib.

Syrian Army units carried out intensive operations and bombardments on Tuesday against gatherings and fortifications of Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists in Daraa al-Balad area and in al-Yadoda village in Daraa southern province.

An army unit killed 17 terrorists and destroyed 2 pick-up cars for them in al-Rastan area in the northern countryside of Homs.

3000 civilians exit Aleppo eastern neighborhoods, army and authorities transfer them to makeshift centers.

Three thousand civilians, who had been besieged by terrorist organizations, got out from the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo city through humanitarian corridors set by the Syrian Army in cooperation with the Russian side.

Some 1500 people from Kanaker town have had their legal status settled on Tuesday in the framework of the local reconciliations in Damascus Countryside and in accordance with the Amnesty Decree no.15 for 2016.

A number of gunmen, who had earlier turned themselves in and handed over their arms to the authorities concerned, were among those who had their status settled, SANA reporter in Kanaker town said, adding that they pledged not to take part in any act that may harm peace and security in the country.

Syrian Arab Army units achieved a new advance in hunting down the takfiri terrorist organizations in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo City, restoring security and stability to al-Sheikh Saeed neighborhood.

Military sources confirmed that units of the Syrian army, in cooperation with the supporting forces and allies, had taken full control of the neighborhoods of al- Sheikh Saeed, al-Shahadin, Housings area, Karem al-Afandi, Karem al-Da’da’ and al-Salehin reaching to Jiser (bridge) al-Hajj, al-Jlom, Bab al-Maqam, al-Firdous and Qal’et(citadel) al-Sahreef.

The source added that Syrian army units are pushing into the neighborhoods of al-Kallasa, Bustan al-Qaser and Souq al-Hal and chasing down the fleeing terrorists to al-Sukkari, al-Mash’had, al-Ameriya and al-Ansari in a big collapse of the terrorists’ morale.

The source clarified that units of sappers of the Syrian Arab Army are dismantling landmines and explosives which had been planted by terrorists in the streets and squares before the escaped the grip of the Syrian Army.

Syrian Army units, in cooperation with the supporting forces, also restored security and stability to the neighborhoods of al-Firdous and Karm al-Da’da’ in the southeastern part of Aleppo City, according to the reporter.

Another Syrian army unit killed 10 ISIS terrorists and destroys 2 vehicles equipped with machineguns in Tall Ayoub (hill) in Aleppo eastern countryside.

Daesh (ISIS,ISIL, IS) terrorists managed to enter Palmyra city in the eastern countryside of Homs province on Sunday following violent clashes with the Army and Armed Forces.

SANA’s correspondent in Homs said that Army and Armed Forces units defended the city valiantly as the terrorists attacked in large numbers exceeding 4,000 from various directions.

The correspondent quoted local sources as saying that ISIS transported large numbers of terrorists and vehicles to Palmyra from Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, and that they sustained heavy losses during the clashes in which they used many vehicles including ones rigged with large amounts of explosives.

Earlier, a military source said that Syrian Army and Armed Forces units clashed with ISIS terrorist groups that attacked military posts in the surroundings of Palmyra, and that the terrorists attacked in large numbers and from different directions, describing the clashes as “fierce.”

SANA’s correspondent had said that the Syrian Air Force carried out several sorties around Palmyra city, inflicting heavy losses upon ISIS members, and that army units repelled an ISIS attack in the surroundings of Palmyra, noting that the clashes are still ongoing at the site.

Other clashes broke out with ISIS terrorists who launched an assault from different directions towards the silos area, 10 km east of Palmyra, the reporter said.

Other ISIS attacks were launched against the Industrial City and Tallet al-Ameriyeh (hill) in the countryside of Palmyra as the terrorists tried to control the hill.

Earlier today, the army units confronted an ISIS attack in the surroundings of al-Tar Mountain and al-Ameriyeh town to the northeast of Palmyra, leaving tens of terrorists dead and destroying a tank and four vehicles equipped with machine guns….>>>…>>>…

Syrian Arab Army units and the Armed Forces working in Homs aided by the Russian Air Force foiled a fierce attack of Daesh (ISIS, ISIL, IS…) terrorists on Palmyra city and the military checkpoints surrounding it in eastern Homs Province over the past night, killing or injuring hundreds of the terrorists.

Syrian National Agency reporters in Homs said that army units and the popular defense groups engaged in fierce clashes using different sorts of weapons with large groups of Daesh terrorists that attacked the military points spread in Palmyra area from the northern, eastern and southern sides.

The reporter said that the clashes ended with thwarting the attack from all the aforesaid axes and killing or injuring hundreds of the terrorists and destroying scores of their vehicles.

The reporter added that army units detonated last night two booby-trapped vehicles of the Takfiri organizations before they reached military posts in al-Sawame’ area.

He mentioned that the military sorties concentrated on Daesh supplying lines deep in the Badyia (desert) area, destroying three Daesh terrorists’ convoys of vehicles in al-Tyba, al-Sukhna and al-Lattoum areas to the east of Palmyra city.

A military source said that army units also repelled Daesh terrorists’ attack in the vicinity of al-Tar Mountain and al-Amiriyah town northeast Palmyra, killing scores of them and destroying 5 of their vehicles .

In the same context, Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement issued on Sunday and published by RT Website “Over the past night, with active Russian air support, Syrian government forces repulsed all attacks by the terrorists on Palmyra.”
“The militants actively used cars filled with explosives, armored vehicles, and rocket artillery. Russian aircraft carried out 64 airstrikes on militant gatherings, positions, columns, and reserves as they advanced,” it added.

Russian General Staff, Sergei Rudskoy: “Syrian Arab Army controls 93% of eastern Aleppo” ~ (videos at bottom of page)

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation affirmed that security and stability were restored to 93% of the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo city due to the Syrian army’s successful operations.

Chief of the Russian General Staff Main Operational Directorate Sergei Rudskoy stressed that Russian and Syrian warplanes have not carried out airstrikes around Aleppo since October 18, pointing out that as a result of a successful advance, 52 districts of eastern Aleppo have been freed from militants by the Syrian army’s ground forces.

Rudskoy pointed out that civilians who escaped from terrorists in the eastern neighborhoods of the city talked about torture and public executions by the so-called “moderate opposition” to prevent them from leaving towards the areas controlled by the Syrian army, adding that Russia is working on documenting all terrorists’ crimes.

He added that more than 1,000 militants have surrendered arms and left eastern Aleppo, 953 of them have been granted amnesty.

Rudskoy said that dozens of tons of humanitarian aid are delivered to liberated Aleppo districts on a daily basis in parallel with conducting the reconstruction of infrastructure and offering medical aid to the population, pointing out that civilians will be able to return to their houses in Aleppo and the whole other liberated residential areas soon….>>>…

Russia is deploying the military police from its Republic of Chechnya to Syria according to an amateur video appeared in the Social Media on December 7. The video allegedly shows preparations of over 100 Chechen military police members before their dispatch to Syria from the military base in Hankala, a settlement near the Chechen Republic’s capital – Grozny.

According to reports in the Russian media, Chechen fighters will guard crucial infrastructure, civilian and military objects in Syria. Russian experts suggest that at least a part of Chechen fighters will be dispatched to the city of Aleppo. With the full liberation of the city, the Syrian-Russian-Iranian alliance will have to improve humanitarian and security situation in the city damaged by the war.

Earlier, the head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, announced that some Chechen units already operate in Syria along with other units of the Russian Special Forces.

In total, Syrian government forces liberated from militants 50 neighborhoods of eastern Aleppo, the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria announced in a statement late on Wednesday.

Jaish al-Fatah and Fatah Halab militant coalitions’ defenses are collapsing in the Syrian city of Aleppo under the pressure of pro-government forces.

Late on December 6 and early on December 7, the Syrian army, the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Liwa al-Quds set control over the areas east and north of the Aleppo Citadel and seized the almost whole neighborhood of Old Aleppo, including the Umayyad Mosque.

According to military experts and analysts, the Russian Special Forces actively participate in military operations in Syria, contributing to elimination of leaders of militants.

A military operation, which was started in Aleppo, was prepared in advance, and Russian military advisers and officers of the Russian Special Forces had a finger in the pie, Russian media reported, citing independent military experts. According to media, this fact is confirmed by numerous actions to eliminate the most notorious leaders of militants’ groups, resulting in appearance of perturbation and perplexity among Syrian jihadists.

Before the offensive of the Syrian Arab Army, accounts of the Syrian opposition in social networks reported about deaths of ten well-known battlefield commanders. Most of them were killed by shots from long-range heavy-caliber sniper rifles. Others became victims of missile attacks of the Russian Aerospace Forces during talks by cell or satellite phones – this indicates the fact of usage of precision-guided munitions.

However, with the beginning of a battle for the eastern districts of Aleppo, this trend continued. Putin calls for state decorations for Russian nurses killed in Aleppo

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked Russia’s Defence Military to posthumously award two female nurses with honoury medals after they were killed in Syria on Monday. Mercenary-terrorists shelled the mobile hospital which Russian nurses Nadezhda Durachenko and Galina Mikhailova had been working in near Aleppo.

The Syrian Arab Army army captured all parts of the Old City, the historic center of Aleppo held by rebels.

Over recent months, Aleppo became major battleground in Syria, engaging government forces, terrorists and numerous opposition groups. Eastern Aleppo is currently encircled by government troops, and the fighting has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.

Previous internationally mediated ceasefires have collapsed as militants continued attacks and opposition failed to expel al-Nusra Front, which is now known as Jabhat Fatah al Sham, from the city.

The army began an advance operation to enter the Old City on Tuesday. According to the local media, the Syrian armed forces control more than 65% of the East Aleppo.

“The remnants of terrorist armed groups are completely knocked out of the old quarters of Aleppo. The enemy is defeated and flees to the southern districts, to the remained terrorist outposts”- a Syrian army militiaman said.

Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a Russian military adviser has died in Syria after shelling by terrorist groups on a residential neighborhood in the western parts of Aleppo city.

Colonel Ruslan Galitsky has died in the hospital from severe wounds. Russian military doctors had been fighting for his life for a few days. The serviceman was wounded during shelling of a residential neighborhood in western Aleppo by militants of the so-called opposition, the Ministry said in statement on Wednesday.

Thousands of terrorists surrendered and left the Syrian town of Khan al-Shih, the Russian military announced.

Some 3,000 militants laid down arms and left the town of Khan al-Shih near Damascus in southern Syria after agreeing to join the ceasefire, the Russian reconciliation center said Wednesday.

“After long and troublesome talks an agreement has been made with militants to join the cessation of hostilities regime,” Col. Alexei Leschchenko from the reconciliation center said….>>>…

A female Russian medical specialist has been killed and two more medics have been injured in a militant shelling of a mobile military hospital in Aleppo, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“Today, between 12:21 and 12:30pm [local time], a medical center of the Russian Defense Ministry’s mobile hospital in Aleppo was shelled by the militants during the reception time,” ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told journalists, adding that “as a result of the direct hit of the reception ward, one Russian military medic was killed [and] two medical specialists were severely injured.”

Some local residents attending medical appointments were also injured during the shelling that targeted one of the field hospitals set up in the government held part of the city, the ministry added.

The Russian Defense Ministry attributes the blame for the incident to “terrorists and their patrons in the US, the UK and France.”

“It is beyond doubt that the shelling was conducted by the ‘opposition’ militants. Moscow understands who gave the Syrian militants the coordinates of the Russian hospital right at the moment when it started working,” Konashenkov said.

The fight for Aleppo is going to be a turning point in the Syrian war which could jumpstart the liberation of other Syrian cities, according to President Assad. Russian military correspondent, retired colonel Mikhail Khodarenok explains how the Russian military is going to use the experience of Palmyra’s liberation in the re-conquest of Aleppo.

In January, General Valery Gerasimov, current Chief of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces revealed the plans of the Syrian Armed Forces to take the offensive along the entire frontline with the aerial support of the Russian military, Mikhail Khodarenok, military correspondent of Russia’s online newspaper Gazeta.ru writes in his article for the website.

Several months later, local fighting goes on in six Syrian regions. The most active operations are being carried out in Lattakia, Aleppo, Hama and Palmyra. In Damascus, the government forces continue to encircle the Eastern Ghouta district occupied by the militants. The clashes often come down to reciprocal skirmish from small arms and artillery strikes. Neither side to the conflict could boast any major military success. Apart from Aleppo, the fighting is done merely by reinforced squadrons and at times it looks quite strange, the expert says.

In his recent interview President Assad said that retaking the city of Aleppo from terrorists would jump start the liberation of other Syrian cities. It would be a springboard to move towards other cities and to liberate them from terrorists.

n order to evaluate the prospects of the Syrian army and its combatant value, Khodarenok reminds of last year’s liberation of Palmyra, which has become the major success of the government forces. Aleppo: Russian mother sacrifices limbs protecting children from terrorist shelling

Russian mother Irina Barakyat lost her hand and leg in Aleppo, Thursday, while protecting two of her children from a shell-blast in the war-torn city.

“I understood I should react fast” Irina stated, adding “thanks to the fact that I covered them with my body, my son has just a fracture and my daughter is not injured.”

Over Kerry’s Head: Why Russia is Delivering Its Upgraded Su-24M2s to Syria.

The Syrian Air Force has received its first two upgraded Sukhoi Su-24M2 all-weather attack aircraft from Russian armories. According to media reports, they are expected to improve the combat capabilities of Syrian air power in the fight against the terrorists. However, according to experts, Moscow and Damascus may also have a hidden motive.

“What difference does it make if it’s Russian or Syrian pilots at the controls of the Su-24s? The main thing is that the bombs drop on their designated targets. If the Syrians begin using the upgraded bombers, will it be difficult to figure out who blew up another camp of ‘moderate’ rebels – Russian or Syrian air power? Damascus, unlike Moscow, is not conducting any negotiations with Washington, and consistently calls all armed opposition in Syria ‘terrorists’.”

“After Russia actively got involved in the Syrian conflict, Moscow also simultaneously began activities to restore the Syrian Armed Forces, the Syrian Air Force first and foremost. This included the modernization of the Su-24MK, and their equipment with the SVP-24 special computing subsystem designed to increase bombing precision many times, along with the training of pilots and maintenance personnel.”

In Russia’s big cities and small villages stand monuments to fallen internationalist warriors. By accepting death in a foreign land, they returned home as symbols of loyalty to military duty…Many of the grown-up children and grandchildren of these internationalist-warriors have donned military uniforms, proving that the succession of generations is not an empty sound.

Some are in Syria today defending the world and our country from international terrorists who call for all of humanity to be killed.

13 soldiers and officers have returned from Syrian missions in advance, having fallen in battle against ISIS. But they did not fall into obscurity nor have they been abandoned. The Homeland remembers them and grieves for them.

he country will remember its heroes, be proud of them, and mourn that they are no longer with us. But we can rest assured knowing that their children will come to take the place of those who never returned from battle. Don’t mind the lamentations about “spoiled youth” and “lack of patriotism.” The Russian people, as alway, gives birth to and grows guys who are ready to lay down their lives for the Homeland….Real heroes.

Russia can be confident that as long as the younger generation continues to honor the military traditions of their fathers and grandfathers, our Homeland will fear no enemy.

“Pray for Palmyra”, concert conducted by Gergiev, in Palmyra

The concert “Pray for Palmyra. Music revives ancient remains” by Russian conductor Valeri Gergiev is scheduled to go ahead in Palmyra, Syria on Thursday, May 5. It will open with a welcome address by the conductor. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also make an appearance via video link. Consecutive translation from Russian to English and Arabic will be provided for both.
The date of the concert coincides with the handover for burial of the remains of special forces officer Aleksander Prokhorenko, dubbed the ‘Russian Rambo,’ who died after ordering an airstrike on his own position after he was surrounded by IS fighters. His remains will depart Moscow for his home village of Gorodky, Orenburg Region, where they will be buried in a ceremony with military honours.
In April, Palmyra was recaptured by the Syrian Army from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Russian air strikes provided support to the Syrian armed forces in their re-taking of the town.
