Al-Nusra Front terrorist organization which earlier claimed its separation from al-Qaeda and the change of its name, is still on the UN “ISIL (Daesh) & Al-Qaida Sanctions List,” Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Friday.
In a Thursday video, al-Nusra Front leader Mohammed Jolani said the group had split from al-Qaeda and changed its name to Jabhat Fath al Sham, or “The Front for Conquest of Levant.”
“In terms of how the UN system views them, there’s consolidated list of all of the individuals and entities associated with al-Qaeda. And al-Nusra continues to be on that list,” Haq told journalists.
Earlier on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the any attempt by a terrorist organization to change its image is futile.
