The voting takes place in areas under the government’s control. More than 7,000 polling stations have been set up. More than 3,500 candidates are competing for 250 seats. President Bashar al-Assad speaks of high voter turnout and says the candidates cover all sectors of the syrian society. Speaking after voting in Damascus, Assad noted that terrorism has been able to destroy much of Syria’s infrastructure, but not its social structure and the national identity. Parliamentary elections are held in Syria every four years. The last vote was held in May 20-12, four months after constitutional reforms were approved by President Assad.

The People’s Assembly elections for selecting 250 members from over 3,500 candidates from across all Syrian provinces began at 7 AM on Wednesday April 13th, with voters beginning to arrive at the voting centers.

Voting centers, which number over 7,300, opened their doors to voters at 7 AM and will remain open until 7 PM. The duration of the elections can be extended for five hours by a decision from the Higher Judicial Committee for Elections.

Candidates began their elections campaigns on March 14th, which continued until the morning of Tuesday April 12th, at the same time as the judicial subcommittees for the elections announced their readiness to carry out and supervise the elections.

President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad voted Wednesday in the People’s Assembly elections at a voting center in al-Assad Library in Damascus.

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem said Saturday UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has no right to talk about Syrian presidential elections, noting that the Syrian Arab Republic delegation will not wait in Geneva forever for other parties to decide to show up.

During a press conference, al-Moallem said the Syrian Arab Republic delegation received a letter from de Mistura scheduling Monday as a date for meeting at the UN HQ in Geneva within the Syrian-Syrian dialogue.

“Meeting with our delegation at first is a good thing,” he said, adding however that the Republic’s delegation “will not repeat the same mistake that happened in the previous round. They are going to wait for 24 hours only.”

“We will no longer accept that [de Mistura] gives up objectivity to please this or that party, and our delegation will reject any attempt to put this issue on the schedule,” he added.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has expressed his country’s opposition to the idea of a “transitional period” in Syria.

Mekdad was quoted by the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV as speaking in a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Tuesday.

“We are talking about a national dialog in Syria and a broad-based government as well as a constitutional process. There is no [talk of a] transitional period in Syria,” the Syrian official said.

“There is no talk about a transitional period in Syria and those who talk about this issue are unaware of Syria’s realities”, Meqdad told reporters after meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Tehran on Tuesday.
