Turkey ground forces invade Iraq in ‘hot pursuit’ of PKK

(PressTV) ~ Two units of Turkish special forces have crossed into northern Iraq in “hot pursuit” of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants after a deadly attack on the army.

“Turkish security forces crossed the Iraqi border as part of the hot pursuit of PKK terrorists who were involved in the most recent attacks,” a Turkish government source said on Tuesday.

“This is a short-term measure intended to prevent the terrorists’ escape,” the source added.

Turkey’s Dogan news agency quoted unnamed military sources as saying that two battalions from Turkey’s special forces crossed the border.

The move comes after at least 14 police officers were killed in a roadside bomb attack in eastern Turkey’s Igdir Province earlier on Tuesday.

In a separate development on Tuesday, at least three Turkish police officers were reportedly killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack by PKK militants on their armored vehicle in the town of Cizre, in the southeastern province of Sirnak.

Later in the day, the Sirnak governor’s office issued a statement on its official website, dismissing the report of police deaths as “baseless and incorrect.”

‘Three or five terrorists’…

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to press ahead with attacks on the PKK militants.

“We did not and will not abandon the nation’s future to three or five terrorists,” Erdogan said in a speech in the capital, Ankara, two days after a deadly attack on Turkish soldiers and police officers by the PKK militants in the Kurdish-dominated southeastern province of Hakkari.

“In this country, the burial mound for martyrs has never remained empty. It appears it will never remain empty,” said Erdogan, stressing that “with God’s permission, Turkey, which has overcome plenty of crises, will get over the plague of terror.”

Erdogan said Turkey’s operations against the PKK have inflicted “serious damage” on the group at home and abroad.

According to official Anatolia news agency, over 50 Turkish warplanes took part in six-hour raids against the PKK positions in northern Iraq early on Tuesday, killing “35 to 40 terrorists according to preliminary findings”.

Ankara launched airstrikes against PKK positions in Iraq and Turkey as well as purported Daesh targets in Syria after a deadly July 20 bomb attack attributed to Daesh terrorists left 32 people dead in the southeastern Turkish town of Suruc, across the border from the northern Syrian town of Kobani.

A shaky ceasefire between Ankara and the PKK that had stood since 2013 was declared null and void by the militants following the Turkish airstrikes against the group.

The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region in southeastern Turkey since the 1984. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead.

50 Turkish fighter jets bomb PKK positions in north Iraq

(PressTV) ~ Turkish fighter jets have carried out a massive operation against the positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group in northern Iraq, killing up to 40 of its members, a report says.

Over 50 Turkish warplanes took part in the six-hour raids early on Tuesday, killing “35 to 40 terrorists according to preliminary findings,” official Turkish Anatolia news agency said.

According to the news agency, 35 F-16 jets and 18 F-4 phantoms participated in the attacks on the PKK targets.

Killing, and getting killed

The operation came two days after 16 Turkish soldiers were killed and six others injured in an exchange of fire and a roadside bomb attack carried out by the PKK in the Kurdish-dominated southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari.

Following the raid, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu pledged to eradicate PKK militants at any price.

“These mountains will be cleaned of terrorists. Whatever happens they will be cleaned,” Davutoglu said on Monday.

Ankara launched airstrikes against PKK positions in Iraq and Turkey as well as purported Daesh (ISIL) targets in Syria after a deadly July 20 bomb attack attributed to Daesh terrorists left 32 people dead in the southeastern Turkish town of Suruc, across the border from the northern Syrian town of Kobani.

A shaky ceasefire between Anakara and the PKK that had stood since 2013 was declared null and void by the militants following the Turkish airstrikes against the group.

Turkey parliament extends mandate for Syria, Iraq military operations

(PressTV) ~ The Turkish parliament has ratified a motion to extend the mandate for military operations in neighboring Syria and Iraq in an alleged attempt to fight the rising threat of terrorism in the region.

On Thursday, Turkish parliament extended another year the mandate for military action against the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Syrian and Iraqi territories.

“Armed terrorist elements continue their presence in northern Iraq. There is also a significant increase in the number of other terrorist elements in Syria and Iraq, as well as the threats they pose,” read the motion, citing “increased risks and threats against Turkey’s national security along the southern borders.”

The motion, which was submitted last week by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), further allows foreign troops to use Turkish soil to launch operations against terrorist threats.

The previous mandate expires on October 1.

US will use Incirlik ‘as long as it takes’

Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Turkey has announced that Washington will continue to use Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey in the alleged battle against Daesh militants.

“In terms of duration, we expect that we will be here as long as is required to achieve the objective that we share, which is to degrade and ultimately defeat Daesh. So, we are thinking of this very much in terms of a set of objectives as opposed to a period of time,” John Bass stressed.

There has been renewed conflict between the PKK and Turkish security forces since July. Turkey has been launching airstrikes against purported Daesh targets in Syria as well as PKK positions in Iraq after a bomb attack attributed to the Takfiri terrorist group, left 32 people dead in the southeastern Turkish town of Suruc on July 20. Ankara also officially joined the so-called anti-Daesh international coalition in late August.

The Daesh terrorist group, with members from several western countries, currently controls areas across Syria as well as northern and western Iraq. The Takfiri militants have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against Iraqi and Syrian communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.

The US and some of its regional allies, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been widely accused of lending staunch support to Takfiri terrorists group fighting against Syria’s legitimate government.

There have been several reports proving Turkey’s support for the militants in Syria. Back in May, center-left Turkish daily newspaper Cumhuriyet posted on its website a video showing a Syrian-bound convoy of trucks loaded with arms and ammunition. According to reports, the trucks, which belonged to Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT), were detected and searched near the Syrian border in the southern Turkish provinces of Hatay and Adana at the time.
