(by Leith Fadel, AlmasdarNews, 5 January 2016) ~ The battle for Sheikh Miskeen in the Dara’a Governorate’s northern countryside is arguably one of the most important battles taking place between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Islamist rebels in southern Syria.
As of recently, the battle has become the focal point for both sides as they continue to call for reinforcements in order to gain the upper-hand; however, most of the time, it is only temporarily.
On Monday morning, the Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) launched a counter-assault near the Battalion 82 Headquarters inside Sheikh Miskeen. This attack resulted in the Islamist rebels taking control of a number of building blocks before nightfall dissipated the fighting.
According to a military source at the 5th Armored Division’s Headquarters in Izra’a, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies now control roughly 55-60 percent of Sheikh Miskeen; however, the pro-government forces still control both the Battalion 82 HQ building and the main base.
Meanwhile, at the strategic hilltop of Tal Hamad, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade of the 5th Armored Division – backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Izra’a – continued their powerful assault on the Islamist rebel defenses, but were unable to advance to the southern perimeter of this hilltop located between Sheikh Miskeen and Nawa.
