Al-Jazeera Correspondent in Berlin Resigns Over Channel’s Loss of Professionalism
BERLIN, 28/12/2012 – Al-Jazeera’s correspondent in Berlin, Aktham Suliman, resigned from the channel due to it becoming a political and intelligence tool in the hand of Qatar and abandoning professionalism in favor of the Qatari government’s agendas.
In an interview with the Deutsche Welle website, Suliman said that al-Jazeera currently lacks professionalism , contrary to when he joined it in 2002, and that it lacks internal structures that immunize it against attempts by the owners or editors to interfere politically in things that should have been handled in a journalistic manner.
He pointed out that al-Jazeera’s coverage of the events in Syria fuels the conflict as it “makes one side out to be mass murderers and turn the others into saints.”
Suliman said that al-Jazeera’s coverage is linked to Qatar’s foreign relations, ignoring what is happening in countries it has good relations with, while focusing in an unprofessional manner on countries with which Qatar has tense relations like Syria and Yemen.
“It’s not a good feeling when you have the impression that you’re no longer a journalist, you’re basically just a guard dog responding to your owner’s whistle when he tells you to go after this state or that government,” he explained.
Suliman said that the Arab Gulf countries are attempting to protect themselves and ensuring that certain groups maintain power, adding that the Gulf doesn’t have “a government worth taking seriously… The Gulf states have rulers whose power has been inherited over decades – in some cases, for centuries.”
He also criticized the western media’s failure to report on poor human rights conditions in Gulf countries.
Suliman’s resignation is one of several that were elicited by al-Jazeera becoming a politicized, unprofessional and biased Qatari tool and a forum for supporting terrorism and extremism.
Al-Jazeera’s poor professional and moral conduct reduced its worldwide viewership from 43 million viewers per day to around 6 million, according to a US study.
Aktham Suliman was born in Syria in 1970. He has a Master’s degree in journalism from Berlin University. He worked in several Arab and German newspapers, radios and channels before joining the Berlin office of al-Jazeera in 2002 and later becoming its director. (H. Sabbagh – SANA)
