Unlike the Islamic State group and al-Qaida’s branch in Syria, the Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham is not on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations.

(By Hannah Allam, Washington, McClatchyDC.com) ~ A senior figure from a Syrian rebel group with links to al Qaida was allowed into the United States for a brief visit, raising questions about how much the Obama administration will compromise in the search for partners in the conflict.
Labib al Nahhas, foreign affairs director for the Islamist fighting group Ahrar al Sham, spent a few days in Washington in December, according to four people with direct knowledge of the trip and who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of U.S. relations with Syrian rebels….[…]…
National security analysts say U.S. authorities likely knew of Nahhas’ arrival – intelligence agencies for years have watched his group’s interactions with al Qaida’s Syrian branch, the Nusra Front.
That suggests that authorities granted him entry at a time when U.S. immigration authorities face political pressure to block visitors with even tenuous ties to extremist groups. Four months after Nahhas entered the United States on a European passport, U.S. authorities denied entry to a well-known Syrian humanitarian leader who had been approved to visit Washington to receive an award from international aid groups.
“They’re treating Labib al Nahhas as an individual, and it’s also useful to have someone to talk to on the other side,” said Faysal Itani, a Syria specialist with the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, who said he’d known about Nahhas’ visit. “They could make, quickly, the decision that he’s persona non grata in the United States and yet they haven’t.”
A Syrian opposition official with knowledge of the matter said it shouldn’t have been surprising that he was allowed entry because Ahrar al Sham is not among U.S.-designated terrorist groups. …[…]…
The State Department declined to answer whether any U.S. officials knew in advance or expressed reservations about Nahhas’s presence in Washington, or whether State Department officials had assisted his entry. …[…]…
The group’s ultimate vision is Islamist rule for Syria and its old links to al Qaida are no secret: One of the group’s founders, Abu Khalid al Suri, was memorialized by al Qaida leader Ayman al Zawahiri after his death in a bombing. …[…]…
For months, Nahhas, serving as Ahrar’s ambassador to the outside world, has flown to foreign capitals and penned op-eds showing a willingness to work with the West, only to see his efforts undermined by the military wing of the group.
Last summer, only a month after Nahhas pledged Ahrar’s commitment to a “moderate” future for Syria, the group issued a statement praising the late Taliban chief Mullah Omar as the embodiment of “the true meanings of jihad and sincerity.”
Ahrar’s militiamen – estimates of its strength range from 7,000 to the 27,000 the group itself claims – are considered skilled, disciplined and well equipped. In several strategic locations, they are the force preventing a rout of the U.S.-backed rebels by Nusra Front or the Islamic State. El general Joseph L. Votel, comandante del Mando Central de EE.UU., principal oficial estadounidense encargado de los asuntos de oriente Medio, llegó en una visita inesperada este sábado a Siria, según informa AP.
El general viajó a varios lugares en el norte de Siria para reunirse con asesores militares que trabajan allí y también se reunió con los líderes de las Fuerzas Democráticas de Siria, un grupo apoyado por EE.UU. en su lucha contra el EI, para evaluar en qué estado se encuentra la lucha contra el grupo extremista.
Votel discutió los preparativos para el plan de ofensiva en la ciudad de Raqqa, capital no oficial del EI.
“El general Votel estuvo en Siria preparando una ofensiva en Raqqa”, afirmó en Twitter Brett McGurk, enviado especial del presidente de Estados Unidos a la coalición contra el EI.
El delegado añadió que las acciones de los líderes del grupo terrorista se han reducido a la publicación de audios a través de Internet.
El Pentágono dijo este viernes que EE.UU. no va a liberar Raqqa junto con Rusia. Esta declaración surgió después de que el ministro de Defensa ruso, Serguéi Shoigú, dijo que Moscú ofreció a Washington trabajar de manera conjunta a partir del 25 de mayo en la planificación y aplicación de los ataques aéreos contra las tropas del Frente al Nusra en Siria. Según el ministro, Rusia se reserva el derecho de atacar unilateralmente desde el 25 de mayo a los terroristas que no se adhirieron a la tregua.
Votel había arribado también de forma inesperada hace dos días a Bagdad, capital de Irak, para reunirse con los comandantes en funciones en ese país, y obtener información actualizada sobre la campaña militar contra el grupo terrorista Estado islámico.

Hezbollah has captured an American and a French spies in its operations in Aleppo, a prominent Lebanese media source revealed on Saturday, adding that the US, Israeli and Saudi intelligence agents helped Al-Nusra Front to find the place of Hezbollah’s martyred military chief, Mustafah Badreddin, and kill him in retaliation.
Two U.S. and French intelligence officers were working in the newly-founded joint operations room of Jeish al-Fatah (a coalition of several terrorist groups) in Aleppo in one of the regions controlled by al-Nusra Front in Aleppo.
The joint operations room was set up so that the French and US intelligence agents can directly command Jeish al-Fatah terrorist attacks in Aleppo and nearby regions.
The U.S. imagined that the captured spies would be taken to Lebanon and alerted Tel Aviv to bomb the convoy that was supposedly taking the captive American and French officers, but the convoy that came under the Israeli airstrike was not carrying the captured spies…[…read more…]…
