The Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and Alexandria and Jerusalem has reportedly started refusing food in a show of solidarity with hundreds of Palestinians, who have gone on hunger strike in Israeli jails in protest at the administrative detention policy and harsh prison conditions.

Gregory III Laham, 83, started the pro-Palestinian measure on Saturday, Arabic-language Wattan news agency reported.

The development came a day after the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) announced that at least 15 Palestinians in the Israeli-run Ofer prison near the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah had launched an open-ended hunger strike.

There are also reports that the Tel Aviv regime is considering force-feeding Palestinian hunger strikers in an attempt to put an end to their protest.

The Israeli Health Ministry has ordered hospitals to get ready to receive hundreds of hunger strikers. The ministry said hospitals should force prisoners to take medicines or nutrients if they are in a life-threatening condition or risk permanent disabilities.

Since April 17, more than 1,600 Palestinian prisoners have joined the protest action, dubbed the Freedom and Dignity Strike, which was initially called by imprisoned and former Fatah movement leader Marwan Barghouti……………………………

Christian denominations in Syria, who follow the Western calendar, celebrated Easter, with celebrations limited to prayers and masses due to the circumstances in Syria and in honor of martyrs.

Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All East Gregory III Laham affirmed during the sermon that Christians of the East are unified despite the suffering visited on them by terrorists, adding that they are determined not leave their homeland.

Meanwhile in the Armenian Orthodox Archdiocese, Primate of the Armenian Church of Damascus Bishop Armash Nalbandian urged in his Easter sermon the Syrians to pray to God “to bless our beloved homeland with peace, brotherhood and prosperity.”

The heads of Christian churches implored God to bless their homeland with security and safety and to bring to an end the suffering of the Syrians at the hands of terrorists, stressing that co-existence that distinguishes the Syrian people will enable them to achieve victory over their enemies.

They also hailed the unbreakable bonds binding the Syrians, pointing out that Syria will remain the homeland of love and peace.

On his sermon after the mass, Syriac Catholic Archbishop Kawak prayed to God to protect Syria and its Army and to achieve victory against terrorism.

Ormai siamo a un giro di boa. La grande operazione mediatico-militare passata alla storia come “Primavera araba”, è costretta a operare in Siria un brusco ripiegamento di rotta, soprattutto in conseguenza del fatto che Russia e Cina hanno posto il loro Veto al Consiglio di Sicurezza dell’ONU per un intervento armato.

Dopo i Regime change in Tunisia, Egitto e Yemen, ma ai quali non è di certo corrisposto il miglioramento delle condizioni di vita delle rispettive popolazioni, dopo la devastazione manu militari compiuta dalla NATO in Libia, che ha lasciato in dote al paese una guerra a bassa intensità di tutti contro tutti, ecco che la geopolitica del caos si è imbattuta in Siria in un muro per ora invalicabile.

Non che nel caso siriano siano mancati, anche qui per operare un “cambio di regime”, dei mezzi di eccezionale portata. Al contrario, tutto quello che era possibile tentare per disarticolare l’unità interna e destabilizzare il quadro politico del paese è stato tentato, con enorme dispendio di mezzi e risorse. Ma invano.

Se guardiamo infatti a quello che sta avvenendo ora alla Siria, possiamo dire che l’opposizione sponsorizzata dall’Occidente e dai Paesi del Golfo – il “Consiglio nazionale siriano” (cns) e l’“Esercito siriano libero” (fsa) – sia politicamente sconfitta e l’unica speranza rimanga quella di perseguire in una serie continua di attentati, di bombe e di uccisioni. A questo punto il “terrore” rimane l’unica carta spendibile per gli architetti del caos.

Non a caso la Siria, uno degli Stati guida del mondo arabo, che si è sempre considerata il “cuore dell’arabismo” (qalb’ al-‘urūbah), il centro del nazionalismo arabo e della lotta contro il sionismo, non ha mai avuto una così forte indipendenza come nel periodo di Ḥāfiẓ al-Assad (1970-2000), quando è diventata, da potenza minore nel concerto geopolitico mediorientale negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta (subendo la guerra fredda araba e le influenze esterne britanniche e poi americane), una delle maggiori e rispettate potenze regionali, non più asservita ai tradizionali rivali come Iraq ed Egitto. Questo è il risultato più evidente dell’astuzia tattica di al-Assad che ha saputo compensare le limitate risorse e la relativa debolezza militare sfruttando abilmente le superpotenze e i popoli vicini.

Ed è esattamente per porre termine a una tale situazione, la quale incarnava un perdurante ostacolo al fine di ridisegnare un “Grande Medio Oriente” secondo le nuove direttrici strategiche internazionali, che ha preso le mosse nel 2011 la poderosa macchina bellica e propagandistica che vediamo in azione.
